Apostolic Exhortation
A type of papal communication encouraging a particular virtue or activity, often following a synod.
Apostolic See
Refers to the jurisdiction of the Pope in his role as the Bishop of Rome.
Bishop of Rome
Another official title for the Pope, highlighting his role as the head of the diocese of Rome.
Canonization
The official process by which the Catholic Church declares someone a saint.
Cardinals
Senior officials of the Catholic Church appointed by the Pope, responsible for electing a new Pope.
Catechism
A summary or exposition of Catholic doctrine, typically presented in question-and-answer format.
Conclave
The gathering of Cardinals to elect a new Pope.
Curia
The central administrative body of the Catholic Church, assisting the Pope in governance.
Encyclical
An authoritative papal letter typically addressing important doctrinal or social issues.
Excommunication
A severe penalty that excludes the individual from participating in Church sacraments and community.
Holy See
The ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome, headed by the Pope.
Infallibility
The doctrine stating that the Pope is incapable of error when pronouncing dogma concerning faith and morals.
Jubilee Year
A special year of remission of sins and universal pardon, typically every 25 years.
Magisterium
The teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church, guided by the Pope and bishops.
Nuncio
A diplomatic representative of the Holy See, equivalent to an ambassador.
Papacy
The office or authority of the Pope.
Papal Audience
A scheduled gathering where the Pope addresses pilgrims and visitors.
Papal Bull
An official papal document or proclamation bearing the Pope’s seal.
Pontiff
Another term for the Pope, derived from "Pontifex Maximus," meaning "chief bridge builder."
Synod
An assembly of bishops convened to discuss and provide counsel on Church matters.
Vatican
The independent city-state within Rome serving as the headquarters of the Catholic Church.
Vatican Council
Formal assemblies convened by the Pope to deliberate Church doctrines and policies.
Veneration
Respect and honor given to saints and holy figures, distinct from worship.
Vestments
Official garments worn by the clergy during liturgical services.
